Question
What is the best way to flatten your lower abs?
Answer
There is no such thing as upper and lower abs. We actually have one long muscle called the recuts abdominis. The rectus has two distinct functions: the upper portion flexes the trunk, and the lower portion tilts the pelvis. Most people are concerned about the lower section because most people accumulate excess fat in the abdominal region and media loves to entice us with exercises that will flatten the “lower abs”. There is no magic answer. Muscle and fat are two distinctly different parts of the body. Strengthening a muscle will not affect the excess fat covering the muscle. The muscle contracts when you do a sit up, but the fat just goes along for the ride. Sit-ups will make the rectus abdominis stronger, but the fat is unaffected. To lose body fat you need to monitor your caloric intake, do some aerobic activity and eat less.
