Question
Some of my indoor cycling participants are complaining of rather significant pain/tightness in their hip flexors. My two best guesses are too low of resistance during standing runs and/or the seat back too much or maybe too high (although I've rarely noticed a seat too high). Both of these, for different reasons, would either load or strain the hip flexors more than is typical. Those are just guesses as to contributing factors and I'm sure there is more going on (weight work, lack of strecthing, etc. are all possibilities).
Answer
There are a few reasons for tight hip flexors. First and foremost, we need more stretching after class. I usually suggest they take a stretch or yoga class after a cycling class. Also, check that they are not sitting too low on the saddle and not too far forward if you can make that adjustment. Changing positions on the bike frequently will help overuse syndrome and not taking too many classes per week. I have seen problems with those students taking class everyday and not stretching. Hope this helps.
