| Question |
| How high should I place my handlebars? |
| Answer |
| Answered by Ken Snowden.
Handlebars are not for supporting body weight. The seat should do all that. Handlebars are for steering the bike and leverage when climbing out of the saddle. They should be exactly shoulder width, no more no less, so the rib cage and diaghragm can expand naturally and for road bikes, not a severe drop from the top bar to the lower bend. There are many brands to choose from.
Handlebars are crucial for breathing. Too high and you are pushed back out of your power position. Your body needs to naturally bend forward to develop power. Usually, the bigger the gear, the more forward lean. If the bars are too low, you cannot breathe properly and your neck and upper back are under constant strain. The more you ride the more you can assume a lower comfortable handlebar position. |
