Hi Norma, I am 70 and very fit. My main exercise is swimming. I am an old professional swimmer. I live in Istanbul/Turkey. In winter months, it is not possible to swim here in the sea and I do not like swimming in pools. I have a standing bike and a bench at home. Therefore, in winter months, my main exercises are, brisk walking, indoor cycling and light weigth lifting, just to tone up my muscles. For the bench; I have an exercise chart fully explaining how to do it. Unfortunately, I do not have a program to show how should I use my bike according to my age. I know THR and I have got an exercise computer on the bike, with an alarm for maximum heart rate. All is fine, but would you please help me in finding an exercise program for indoor cycling, describing, age groups, speed, duration etc. so that I can use my bike without endangering my health. For the last 20 years, I became an expert on healthy living, anti-aging and fitness, so I know and implement everything. I should be grateful, if you can kindly help me. Regards. Norma, I need to know I had an exercising routine, where I was walking at least 60 minutes on the treadmill, and then due to some family problems that came up, I quit all of a sudden. Can you tell me if this would cause me to feel achy all over?

Hi Norma, Whenever I do my abdomen exercises, I never seem to feel any soreness the next day. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to do more crunches or am I just doing them wrong all together? Thank you.

I'm 5'5 and 120 lbs. But even though I may look like I have no fat on me I definately have fat on my stomach, thighs, butt and feel like I have no muscle tone. I work out 5 days a week, running on a treadmill-doing interval workouts with incline, but my body never feels tight or toned. PLEASE HELP! I am really frustrated.

Some of my indoor cycling participants are complaining of rather significant pain/tightness in their hip flexors. My two best guesses are too low of resistance during standing runs and/or the seat back too much or maybe too high (although I've rarely noticed a seat too high). Both of these, for different reasons, would either load or strain the hip flexors more than is typical. Those are just guesses as to contributing factors and I'm sure there is more going on (weight work, lack of strecthing, etc. are all possibilities).

I have heard that the formula to determine a healthy heart rate is 220- your age. Is this accurate information? I am 31, which would put my active heartrate in at 189, is this safe? Also, is this the heart rate that is just for cardiovascular, because when I am working out it suggests different heartrates for different types of workouts, such as fat burning, cardio, etc. Is there really such a thing as a varying heartrate that is safe depending on the type of exercize, for example is it ok to have a heartrate that high if you are biking and treadmilling but it should be lower say when you're doing a less stenuous workout?

1) I take a multivitamin daily with potasium and I also eat bananas daily yet when I do cardio, after working out with my personal trainer, I am experiencing cramps in my calves. After I work out with my trainer, I do my stretching, including calf stretching and I want to do cardio for 40 minutes, but the cramping starts after 5 min. What is the daily intake on potasium? Just want to make sure my multivitamin has enough.

I have no idea what my sitting hr is but when I am working out it reaches 189 and stays there most of the time. I do not know why it is that high and if it is dangerous. What happens when your hearrate is that high, does it burn more calories? I just don't get it.

I am having trouble getting a straight answer wherever I go, so I hope you will be able to help me. My question is this, what is best for ridding yourself of celulite? I have a larger butt and thigh area, however am not fat. I want to lose the weight (some of it) in that area without increasing the size. Will lunges and squats increase the size of your butt and thighs and will they help decrease celulite or is that impossible to improve? I have been doing tred and bike, but don't know if that will improve my problem areas and if so in what way, either by toning or by burning calories? Thank you for your response and time.

Hi norma. I want to build some muscle in my arms & have a nice defined tone to them. I would love to have my arms look like Linda hamilton's from the terminator movie. Anyway I train my arms 3 days a week I am only lifting 8 lbs can't really go any higher in weight than that I don't think. But I do 2 sets of 8 different exercises for my arms. I do 50 reps for each exercise totaling 100 reps 3 days a week. I used to do 20 reps but that got too easy, when I do 50 I can barely lift my weight on the last rep. My arms are shaky and burning. Will doing this amount build muscle ? I've heard a lot about you can build muscle lifting a heavy weight & fewer reps, or you lift a light weight and do a lot more reps, and achieve the same results Muscle !!! but I don't want huge arms of course. can you define if there is truth to this ? if so, when will I start to notice muscle and definition in my arms ?
