Question |
I have heard that the formula to determine a healthy heart rate is 220- your age. Is this accurate information? I am 31, which would put my active heartrate in at 189, is this safe? Also, is this the heart rate that is just for cardiovascular, because when I am working out it suggests different heartrates for different types of workouts, such as fat burning, cardio, etc. Is there really such a thing as a varying heartrate that is safe depending on the type of exercize, for example is it ok to have a heartrate that high if you are biking and treadmilling but it should be lower say when you're doing a less stenuous workout? |
Answer |
The Karvonen formula is well known and used by many people. It is a way to estimate your heart rate zones. Remember, there is a 10% error either above or below these numbers. Use perceived exertion in conjunction with your calculations. Listen to your body. |
